Brisbane’s Exhibition Station Reopens for Events, Will Operate Year-Round by 2029

Brisbane’s historic Exhibition train station is back on track, just in time for major events at the RNA Showgrounds. After years of redevelopment under the Cross River Rail project, the upgraded station is reopening this week, offering a glimpse into Brisbane’s future transport infrastructure.

First Stop: Camping and Caravan Show

The station, located in Bowen Hills, will begin operations this week for event-goers heading to the Queensland Caravan, Camping & Touring Supershow, which runs from Wednesday through Sunday. It’s a soft launch of sorts, Exhibition Station will continue to open temporarily for major events until it transitions to full-time service in 2029, aligned with the broader rollout of the Cross River Rail network.

Cheaper Fares for Everyone

Queenslanders heading to the station are also in for a fare cut. Transport Minister Brent Mickelberg confirmed that travel will be covered under the state’s new 50-cent fare scheme. To put it in perspective, a family of four travelling from Ipswich to the Ekka during peak time in 2022 would have paid over $38 for the round trip. Now, under the new plan, that same trip costs just $4.

“It’s about making public transport more affordable and accessible,” Mickelberg said. “This is a station built for the future, and we want everyone to benefit from it.”

Upgrades with the Future in Mind

The overhaul of Exhibition Station includes the installation of new lifts, improved platforms, and a redesigned station plaza, enhancing both accessibility and flow during crowded events.

These upgrades are part of a broader transformation of the Brisbane Showgrounds precinct, which is being revamped ahead of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Plans include a major redevelopment of the main arena to increase capacity to 20,000 seats, as well as the construction of the athletes’ village.

Looking Ahead to 2029

Though currently operating for major events only, Exhibition Station is expected to launch full-time, daily services in 2029 once the Cross River Rail tunnels are fully operational. When that happens, it’ll become a key link in Brisbane’s evolving public transport network, serving not just event crowds but everyday commuters as well.

For now, it’s back just in time for Brisbane’s busiest season, and this time, it’s here to stay.
