Since 2021, McDonald’s Australia has stopped offering plastic toys in Happy Meals, choosing sustainable options like books, paper-based toys, and recycled items instead. Among the new sustainable offerings, one of the most popular icons is PokĂ©mon cards. First introduced in Happy Meals in 2021 to celebrate 25 years of PokĂ©mon, these paper-based toys quickly became a favourite and returned in 2023 due to high demand. 

Although these paper-based toys have become iconic worldwide, some fans still miss the classic plastic toys, which were a memorable part of Happy Meals for many years. The Minions toys in McDonald’s Happy Meals in June 2024 suggest that McDonald’s Australia might be open to reintroducing plastic toys for special promotions.

5 September 2024, McDonald’s Australia’s bringing back plastic Mario Kart toys to their Happy Meals has sparked great excitement, especially since it’s been a decade since the last plastic toys Mario Kart were released in 2014. This excitement is heightened by the contrast with the paper card Mario toys from 2022, timely for the Mario movie celebration while lacking the durability and collectible-quality of plastic.

This return to plastic not only meets fan demand but also revives the cherished tradition of collecting long-lasting Happy Meal toys, blending nostalgia with the thrill of new collectibles.

I visited two McDonald’s locations in Melbourne, but both only had Bowser toys available. The overall quality of the toy is quite good; it doesn’t have a low plastic feel, and the colours match those shown in the promotional images. One thing to note is that the Kart itself is without any paint, allowing you to customise it with the stickers provided according to your preferences.
