The AFL Integrity Unit has launched an investigation into Adelaide Crows star Izak Rankine following allegations that he used a homophobic slur during Saturday night’s clash with Collingwood.
The issue has quickly become one of the biggest talking points in footy this week, with both the league and Rankine’s club confirming inquiries are underway.
AFL and Adelaide Confirm the Investigation
The AFL released a statement on Sunday, saying: “The AFL is aware of an alleged matter, with the integrity unit making inquiries.”
The Adelaide Football Club also acknowledged the situation, telling fans: “We are aware of an alleged matter involving one of our players in Saturday night’s game and we are in discussions with the AFL.”
Captain Jordan Dawson Speaks Out
Crows captain Jordan Dawson fronted the media on Monday morning and admitted the timing was far from ideal.
“Obviously, it is not ideal, but it is in the AFL’s hands. It is being investigated, and we will see what happens,” Dawson said.
When asked whether the incident pointed to a cultural issue at the club, he dismissed the suggestion, saying: “No, I don’t think so.”
The Match and What’s at Stake
The alleged incident occurred during Adelaide’s thrilling three-point victory over Collingwood — their eighth win in a row. The result has all but secured the Crows a top-two finish heading into finals.
So far, there has been no confirmation on whether a slur was actually made or if a complaint originated from a Collingwood player.
But if Rankine is found guilty, the fallout could be massive. Similar incidents have seen players suspended anywhere from three to six matches — enough to end a player’s season and potentially derail a finals campaign.
Recent Precedents in the AFL
The league has taken a hard line on homophobic slurs in recent years.
Jack Graham of West Coast received a four-match ban earlier this year after self-reporting and admitting guilt, which reduced what could have been a five-game suspension.
Jeremy Finlayson of Port Adelaide also came under scrutiny in a separate case, sparking debate over consistency and fairness in AFL penalties.
These examples highlight just how seriously the league treats the issue — and why Rankine could be facing a lengthy stint on the sidelines if the allegations are proven.
What It Means for the Crows
Rankine has been a game-changer for Adelaide this season, and his absence during finals would be a significant blow. With the club in red-hot form and chasing its first flag in decades, this investigation looms as a potential turning point in their premiership run.
As the AFL Integrity Unit continues its work, Rankine and the Crows will be left waiting to see if their star playmaker will be free to take the field when it matters most.
